I was born and brought up in a highly cultured, orthodox vaishnavite family from Tamilnadu. In my early childhood days I learnt Sanskrit, vedic literature and ancient epics from my grand father who was a scholar in those subjects. Later on, I developed a liking to hindi film music. I used to learn songs by listening to the radio and start singing. Before long, I was singing for small functions and gatherings.
Once when I was staying in Teheran with my family, Shri Raj Kapoor visited in connection with one of his films. There was a big party for felicitating him and I performed in the party and got an ovation from every body. Shri Raj Kapoor offered to give me a voice test in R. K. Studio. Then I came to Bombay, gave a voice test in R.K. Studio and was liked by everyone. Then I was sent to Shanker Jaikishen and immediately I was put in to crash course training in music by great ustads and gurus.
Then came the D.Day. I sang “Titli Udi” standing before the microphone for the first time in my life. Thrill of thrills! Soon there was a big “hulchal” in the film industry. Everyone liked my voice, even big music directors like shri O. P. Nayyar, Shri Hement kumar and Shri Ravi expressed their admiration for my voice.
There upon I sang for many movies like “Gumnaam”, “Pyar Mohabbat”, “Shatranj” “Ek naari Ek Brahmachari”, “Diwana”, “Around the word in 8 dollars”, “Pehchaan”, “Sapnon Ka Saudagar” and many others. Then, I sang in “Mera Naam Joker” for Mr. Raj Kapoor who had discovered me. 3 songs were recorded with great aplomb...and then for some unknown reason they were not included in the film.
There after I recorded pop songs for the first time in India and started giving music direction in movies like “ Mandir Masjid”, “Maila Aanchal”, Tu Meri Mai Tera” , “Kshhitij” and many others.
Now, I am with you with my music shows, music courses and music albums! |
